Learning in the Middle Years

This workshop provides a comprehensive understanding of the essential elements of middle schooling. It provides opportunities for educators of young adolescents to further develop ideas and approaches that aim to engage learners and develop the relationships so essential for the development of students in these years.


Learning in the Middle Years – an introductory session

• The adolescent brain – a work in progress
• What's different about the way adolescents learn?
• The importance of relationships in the middle years – essential school structures
(student grouping, timetabling, teacher teaming)
• The middle years curriculum – strategies for integration and negotiation
• The importance of emotional learning in the middle years curriculum
• Innovative programs in the middle years
• Examples of Middle schools in action (guest leadership and teaching staff from successful middle schools can be organised at your request)

Learning in the Middle Years would ideally take place over a number of days, with this workshop being of an introductory nature. One or more visitors from Middle School sites create a Panel for questioning and sharing ideas. Networks can be built between participating schools so that follow-up and support are available.
