What’s so Special about Brain Research,
from an Education Perspective?
Recent findings from the fields of cognitive and emotional neuroscience
provide educators with a new opportunity for introspection on our
profession. How can we add to our knowledge concerning the biology
of thinking and memory? How would school programs change if new
understandings from neuroscience were persuasive? Are learning principles
or organisational principles driving classroom routines? Brain research
presents an unprecedented opportunity to reflect on the vast array
of practices that make up teaching, and to determine what actually
benefits students in classrooms, as well as what needs to change
in order to improve learning and make the schooling experience more
enjoyable for all students. We have learnt that the human brain
is highly ‘plastic.’ Life-long learning is our biological
imperative. We have learnt that the brain needs certain biological
conditions met in order to work at optimal levels – nutrition,
sleep, exercise, emotional engagement and safety from threat are
key elements of conditions for learning. The classroom of the future
must reflect the biological and social nature of diversity and create
programs based on learning rather than teaching.
Our work builds the bridges between the many disciplines that inform
teaching and learning. We are at the leading edge of creating learning
sites that truly reflect the mission statement of so many institutions.
Enjoy the new ways whilst being respectful of our history in education,
and watch the students you have the priviledge to teach grow towards
the goals we collectively set!
