About Focus Education

Welcome

Focus Education provides a Professional Learning service for educators and allied industries across Australia and internationally. Director of Focus Education, John Joseph M Ed, is an experienced classroom practitioner, university educator and professional speaker with expertise in the field of contemporary learning theories and practices congruent with this. The mission of the organisation is to provide the most current information about learning with the brain in mind as possible, to educators and educational administrators, at the most competitive rate achievable.

"John, you are a superstar: keynoter and presenter extraordinaire. Our teachers cannot get enough of you. You must come back! You have certainly earned yourself a place in our NESA Hall of Fame."
David Chojnacki, NESA Center, GREECE, Keynote and workshops for 750 delegates in Bangkok

Research into how the human brain learns presents an unprecedented opportunity to reflect on the vast array of practices that make up teaching and learning, and to determine what actually benefits students in classrooms, as well as what needs to change in order to improve learning and make the schooling experience more enjoyable and satisfying for all. We have learnt that the human brain is highly 'plastic'. Life-long learning is our biological imperative. We have learnt that the brain needs certain biological conditions met in order to work at optimal levels - nutrition, sleep, exercise, emotional engagement and safety from threat are key elements of conditions for learning. The classroom of the future must reflect both the biological and social nature of diversity and create programs based on learning rather than teaching.

Brain-compatible education is a term to describe the highly interdisciplinary blend of theories that relate to all levels of organisation of the human brain. Strategies claiming to be brain-compatible must satisfy the criteria of contributing to the likelihood of engagement in learning from students, regardless of the weighted elements that mitigate against learning. John Joseph’s work builds bridges between the many disciplines that inform teaching and learning. His conference addresses inspire educators. They excite young people and provide frameworks for parents to see new breathtaking possibilities in one of the world's most valuable institutions – our schools.

“I believe people leave your workshops anxious for more John, because you have presented information to them which they are innately interested. The content and pace of your workshops, the pitch of your delivery, the latest ICT images, the relevant handouts and readings all combine to result in highly successful outcomes. You make personal connections to new learning. You make significant impacts.”
Dale Gathercole South Australian primary school principal
